THE number of election-related incidents recorded by the Philippine National Police (PNP) regarding the recent national and local elections rose to 20, according to its spokesperson.
PNP spokesperson Police Colonel Jean Fajardo said the additional incidents were from Region 9 and the Cordillera Administrative Region.
However, Fajardo said that the number of election-related violent incidents this year have gone down significantly compared to the last two national and local elections.
This is from the 166 incidents of violence recorded during the 2010 national and local elections and 133 during the 2016 polls.
According to Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) spokesperson and Undersecretary Jonathan Malaya, this goes to show the dramatic improvement in the country’s electoral system and readiness of law enforcement authorities to responsd to any threat during an election period.
