Comelec mulls idea of giving its chairman powers to put an area under the poll body’s control

THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) is keen on the idea of possibly giving powers to its chairman to immediately place an area under Comelec control.

This, according to Comelec Commissioner Atty. Erwin George Garcia, is to speed things up for the poll body’s preparation for the upcoming May elections.

This way, Garcia said, there would be no more need for an en banc meeting every week, which can possibly create delays, especially when quick action is needed to avert violence and chaos in a particular area.

Under the current set up, only the Comelec en banc has the power and ability to place an area under Comelec control.
