The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) launched a new digital platform for Filipinos looking for practical science-based solutions for farming, environmental protection and natural resource management and provide easier access to local biotechnology innovations.
The DENR introduced the Pinoy Biotech Hub during the opening of the 22nd National Biotechnology Week (NBW), creating a centralized online resource where the public can discover technologies developed by government agencies, universities and industry partners.
The platform is designed to make biotechnology more accessible beyond laboratories and research institutions by connecting people with innovations that can address real-world needs in their communities.
For farmers, environmental managers, researchers and other users, the hub can serve as a gateway to technologies involving climate-smart agriculture, wastewater treatment, soil restoration, sustainable marine resources and other applications of biotechnology.
The hub was developed by the DENR Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau (ERDB), together with the NBW Inter-Agency Steering Committee (IASC). It also aims to close information gaps among institutions and make it easier for researchers and potential partners to find technologies and explore opportunities for collaboration.
One of the innovations featured during the event was H2Organics™, a hydroseeding-hydrogel technology developed by ERDB chemist Rejaynil Valdez. The technology is intended to help rehabilitate mined-out and degraded lands, demonstrating how biotechnology can be applied to restore areas affected by environmental damage.
The potential benefits extend to communities that depend on healthy ecosystems. Technologies that improve land restoration, conserve native species, produce quality planting materials and support sustainable resource management can help strengthen the environmental resources on which people depend.
Environment Secretary Juan Miguel “Mitch” Cuna, in a keynote message delivered by DENR Undersecretary Ernesto Adobo Jr., said the agency is committed to strengthening research and innovation in environmental biotechnology and bringing promising technologies from laboratories into practical applications.
The DENR also emphasized that biotechnology development should be pursued responsibly, with consideration for both ecosystems and communities.
The launch coincided with a public biotechnology exhibit featuring innovations from eight government agencies, including the Department of Agriculture, Department of Health, Department of Science and Technology, Department of Trade and Industry, Department of the Interior and Local Government, Department of Education and Commission on Higher Education.
Academic and industry organizations, including the International Rice Research Institute, Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture, International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications, CropLife Philippines, Health and Dietary Supplement Association of the Philippines, Biotechnology Coalition of the Philippines, Technological University of the Philippines-Taguig and The UPLB Genetics Society, also presented their work.
The participating institutions signed a ceremonial digital wall of commitment, reaffirming their support for the responsible, ethical and science-based development of biotechnology.
The 2026 National Biotechnology Week runs from September 21 to 24 under the theme “Biotek para sa Kinabukasan: Kalikasan, Kalusugan, Kagandahan, Kabuhayan at Kaunlaran.”
Through the Pinoy Biotech Hub, the organizers hope to make the benefits of biotechnology more visible and accessible—helping turn Filipino research and innovation into solutions that people and communities can use.
