THE Presidential Daughter as party standard bearer in next year’s presidential race?
Not so fast, says the ruling party PDP-Laban’s executive director, Ronnie Munsayac. The idea of having Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte as the party’s bet for the 2022 elections would have to wait, he said.
In a virtual press conference, Munsayac underscored the need to field a presidential bet from among the legitimate PDP-Laban members. He said that the ruling party should not be looking outside its membership roster in trying to determine who should become their standard bearer.
“Kung usaping eleksyon naman po ang pag uusapan… ang abiso namin sa aming kapartido at ito ang request ng party mates namin sa grassroots level, is that kung may standard-bearer ang PDP-laban ay dapat taga-PDP Laban,” Munsayac emphasized.
“Kung may malakas na kandidato sa loob ng partido, bakit pa tayo titingin ng kandidato sa labas naman ng partido?” added Munsayac, without actually referring to Mayor Sara who has been reported as being wooed to replace his dad President Rodrigo Duterte.
Prior to Munsayac’s statement, Duterte, in his capacity as chairman of the ruling party, urged bickering groups inside the PDP-Laban to set aside his possible bid for the presidency, and instead give his and the party’s support to the Duterte daughter and father tandem.
“Kahapon ‘di nakita ang ganitong sign ng pressure kay Senator Pacquiao kasi as I’ve told you napakalakas pa po ng suporta ng ating general membership kay Senator Pacquiao as party president,” said Munsayac.
Munsayac further claimed that Pacquiao doesn’t even feel threatened by the national council meeting held on Monday, citing numbers. He said that the 107 in attendance does not even represent one percent of the PDP-Laban’s 100,000 members.
The ruling party on Monday adopted a resolution urging Duterte to run for vice president. The resolution also urged Duterte to choose his running mate for president in the 2022 polls.
Earlier in the day, Pacquiao formally sought an audience with the President to iron out what he aptly described as minor misunderstandings in the administration party. It would also be then that Pacquiao will ask the President if the latter intends to pursue the VP run.
