New petition to disqualify Marcos filed with the Comelec

A NEW petition seeking to disqualify former Senator Bongbong Marcos from running for president in next year’s elections was filed with the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

The petitioners came from Pudno Nga Ilokano and some Martial Law survivors. They were assisted by former Comelec chairman and constitutionalist Christian Monsod and lawyers from Ateneo.

In their petition, they pointed to the need to unify and prevent what they called an “attempt” by Marcos to run as president.

Marcos, they said, was convicted by the Quezon City RTC for not paying the correct taxes.

According to Margarita Salonga-Salandanan, one of the petitioners and grandchild of former Senator Jovito Salonga, they urged the Comelec to immediately cancel the candidacy of Marcos.

She pointed out that ordinary citizens pay taxes but cannot escape from the law, compared to Marcos who can easily avoid paying taxes just because of his name.

This latest petition is the fourth disqualification petition filed against Marcos and the ninth overall against the former senator, which includes the call to cancel his certificate of candidacy (COC).

Meanwhile, Atty. Vic Rodriguez, legal counsel and spokesperson of Marcos, said they will not comment until they see a copy of the new petition.
