Army, rebels clashed in Zambales; 600 residents evacuated

SAN MARCELINO, ZAMBALES – Several ammunitions were confiscated after the encounter between the elements of the Philippine Army and alleged rebels in Barangay Lumibao of this town.

The 7th Infantry Division (7ID) of the Philippine Army retrieved six backpacks that contained various ammunitions for M203, M16, and caliber 45 pistol, including first aid kits that were believed to be owned by rebel bandits operating in the area.

During the encounter, one of the soldiers was wounded and was taken to Basa Air Base for medical treatment.

After requesting for air support, the Augusta AW109 helicopter was again deployed and fired five rockets to where the rebels are hiding. After the bombardment, the rebels stopped returning fire.

Another air support was called as the UH1H helicopters lifted troops to block the escape route of the rebels.

Meanwhile, residents of the area were advised to evacuate while being escorted by the San Marcelino Municipal Police Station.

Mayor Elvis Soria has ordered the deployment of a medical team, including providing food, medicine and shelter to the evacuees at the evacuation center in Barangay Aglao.

Around 600 residents evacuated Sitio Lumibao, with mostly children.

The Local Government Unit is currently taking care of the evacuees, ensuring that still follow safety protocols to hinder the spread of the Coronavirus disease in the evacuation center.
