SM Prime Holdings, Inc. (SM Prime) has launched the SM Waste-Free Future Manual, a practical guide that promotes proper waste segregation through its RDC model: Recyclable, Disposable, Compostable.
Unveiled during the Sustainability Expo (SUSTEX 2025), the manual is designed to make segregation simple, accessible, and actionable for individuals and communities.
“The Waste-Free Future Manual reflects SM Prime’s commitment to advancing sustainable waste management. We want to encourage everyone to take small steps that create a big impact,” said Hans “Chico” Sy, President of SM Engineering Design and Development.
Addressing a Growing Challenge
The Philippines generates an estimated 61,000 tons of waste daily, including 2.7 million tons of plastic annually—a figure projected to rise with rapid urbanization and poor disposal practices.
The RDC system simplifies waste sorting and empowers people to take part in solutions that reduce landfill use and support recycling. The manual also highlights innovative reuse initiatives across SM Prime’s business units, showcasing how circular practices can keep materials in use and inspire others to follow.

Dr. Selva Ramachandran, Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), praised the effort, stating:
“Proper waste segregation is an entry point toward a circular economy—one that goes beyond waste management to design out waste, keep materials in circulation, and regenerate natural systems.”
