Suspect charged in fatal Commonwealth Avenue shooting; Forensic evidence links to 2021 Case

The Quezon City Police District (QCPD), led by PCOL Melecio Buslig Jr., has officially filed murder charges against Abo Kabalo Sampillo for the fatal shooting of Wilmer Caponpon Zara on March 14, 2025, at 6:26 PM in front of Bingo Fortune along Commonwealth Avenue, Barangay Commonwealth, Quezon City.

According to a report from the Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit (CIDU) under PMAJ Don Don Llapitan, the incident began when MMDA enforcers flagged down the suspect—who was wearing a black T-shirt with an Eagles logo—for a traffic violation. Instead of complying, he fled northbound. The victim, Wilmer Zara, pursued him on a motorcycle but was shot during the chase. A witness immediately alerted officers from Police Station 6, who rushed Zara to Rosario Maclang Bautista General Hospital, where he was declared dead at 7:01 PM.

CCTV footage revealed that the suspect, riding a black Honda Click, was initially pursued by MMDA enforcers before being chased by the victim. The footage captured the suspect stealing Zara’s motorcycle, counterflowing on Soliven Street, and fatally shooting him near Bingo Fortune. Additional footage showed him walking near Xentro Mall before fleeing on another motorcycle.

Further investigation linked Sampillo to a previous shooting on November 20, 2021, in Novaliches. A forensic examination confirmed that fired cartridge cases from both incidents matched, indicating the same firearm was used.

Recovered evidence from the crime scene included two 9mm Luger fired cartridge cases, both confirmed to have been discharged from the same weapon.

A murder complaint has been formally filed against the suspect before the Quezon City Prosecutor’s Office.
