THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) has not yet monitored any untoward incidents connected to the first day of the official campaign period of candidates for national positions for Eleksyon 2022.
The statement was made by Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez, and likewise reminded candidates to strictly abide by the existing minimum public health standards as a precaution to curb the spread of COVID-19.
According to Jimenez, the Comelec campaign committee already coordinated with barangay officials to monitor any violations during the campaign period.
The Comelec official also reminded candidates that violations of campaign rules instituted by the Comelec, including precautionary measures against COVID-19, will be considered an election offense with corresponding penalties of imprisonment or fines.
Based on Section 14 of Comelec Resolution 10372, all activities such as handshakes, hugs, kissing or any action that involves physical contact between the candidate, their companions and the public are strictly prohibited during in-person campaigns and in all Alert Level categories.
Even taking of “selfies” or taking of pictures near the candidate, their companions together with the pubilc are also prohibited.
