55 more Delta variant cases detected; total in PH now at 119

THE Philippine Genome Center (PGC) reported that an additional fifty-five cases infected with the COVID-19 Delta variant have been detected in the Philippines over the weekend.

PGC data showed that as of yesterday, July 24, there are now a total of 119 cases of the highly contagious variant in the Philippines.

The PGC said 12 of these cases are still active cases, while 103 have already recovered and four were reported to have died.

The Delta variant–first detected in India–is known to be highly transmissible than the Alpha variant and the original strain from Wuhan, China.

This situation prompted the government to reinstate general community quarantine (GCQ) with “heightened restrictions” in the National Capital Region (NCR) together with four other areas, namely Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur, Davao de Oro and Davao del Sur, from July 23-31, 2021.

Data also showed an 94 additional cases of the Alpha variant to bring the total cases in the country to 1,773, with 19 active cases, 1,636 recoveries and 116 fatalities.

As for the Beta variant, 179 new cases were reported in the Philippines for 2,019 total, with 19 active ones, 1,926 recoveries and 72 deaths.

The Theta variant also added nine new cases for a total case count of 244, one active case, 240 recoveries, while three have already died.
