The Supreme Court voted to junk the electoral protest filed by former senator Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. in 2016 against Vice President Leni Robredo.

Acting as Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET), the Supreme Court decision was unanimous and formally declares VP Robredo as the true winner for the vice presidential race in the 2016 elections.

Supreme Court spokesperson Brian Hosaka said they are still awaiting for a copy of the resolution.

Malacañang said it respects the High Court’s decision, according to Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque, though he believes former Senator Marcos may move for reconsideration of the decision.

Hosaka, however, can’t say yet if the case is still appealable.

The Liberal Party, through its president Senator Francis Pangilinan welcomed the decision, although he wished the issue had been decided sooner.

Marcos first questioned VP Robredo’s win five years ago, where VP Robredo won by 263,473 votes. This pushed him to file an electoral protest against the voting results.

The camp of Marcos also attempted to inhibit Supreme Court Associate Justice Marvic Leonen from the case, which the High Court also dismissed. (With report by Jonah Aure)
