PRESIDENTIAL Daughter and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte is not really thinking of jumping to the PDP-Laban fence, even if the ruling party’s members are adamant in making her join.
She remained firm in staying put with Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP), a party the young Duterte herself founded, and Hugpong sa Tawong Lungsod.
She added that being part of any national political party is far from her mind.
PDP-Laban acting secretary-general Melvin Matibag earlier told reporters that the party would likely support her for president if her father, President Rodrigo Duterte chooses her as his standard-bearer, but underscored the need for the young Duterte to join the PDP-Laban first.
A seemingly confident Matibag said that once Sara joins their party, only then would the party members could make her the standard bearer.
But even in the event that the Davao City mayor does not join the PDP-Laban, the ruling party may still support her Palace bid, citing similarities in HNP’s principles with that of theirs.
However, a faction identified with PDP-Laban president Senator Manny Pacquiao earlier underscored the need for one to be a legitimate member of the PDP-Laban to become the party’s standard-bearer.
“If we have a strong candidate from our party, why should we support a candidate from outside the party,” said PDP executive director Ronnie Munsayac earlier.
Munsayac is with Pacquiao who had not joined the party assembly where the party urged President Duterte to run for vice president in 2022. Matibag is one of those staunchly supporting that call.
According to Mayor Duterte, she’d rather “rise and fall” with HNP and HTL.
