Riot broke out anew in Bilibid prison, 3 inmates dead, scores hospitalized

At least three deprived of liberty (PDL) inmates were killed while 64 others are injured, 6 of them in critical conditions after a riot broke out between rival gangs inside the infamous National Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City on Monday morning.

According to Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Spokesperson Gabriel Chaclag, just before 8:00 a.m. at the East Quadrant of the national penitentiary where the riot began between rivals Commando Gang and Sputnik, both have the reputation of being one of the dreaded gangs inside NBP.

Prison guards in battle gear with the support from the regional police swat team stormed the East Quadrant of the NBP only to meet by resisting inmates armed with arrow spikes and other sharp weapons hurling at rival gang members.  

The unrest subsided around 10:00 a.m. where three dead bodies were found at the clash site.

The injured were rushed to the NBP hospital were six of them were transferred to Muntinlupa hospital after sustaining serious injuries due to stab wounds.

Chaglag said the inmates have been away for six months due to pandemic that could have exacerbated their temper.

The riot did not spread to another quadrant.

All penal colonies in the country have been placed on red alert due to the incident.

On October 9, exactly one month ago, a riot broke out in the same quadrant of the NBP Maximum Security Compound killing 9 members belonging to the said rival gangs.
