THE Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has reported an increase in the real-time seismic energy measurement (RSAM) of Taal Volcano starting January 4, 2025.
According to PHIVOLCS, the Taal Volcano Network recorded 12 volcanic earthquakes, including six episodes of tremors, since January 1, 2025. The agency also noted the absence of degassing plumes from the volcano’s Main Crater, coinciding with the rise in RSAM levels.
The last recorded sulfur dioxide emission from Taal Volcano was on December 30, 2024, with an output of 2,753 tons per day.
PHIVOLCS explained that the increase in RSAM, combined with the absence of visible degassing from the Main Crater, could indicate a blockage in the volcanic gas pathways inside the volcano. This situation may lead to a buildup of pressure, potentially triggering a phreatic or minor phreatomagmatic eruption.
Despite these observations, Taal Volcano remains under Alert Level 1, signifying low-level unrest. PHIVOLCS continues to closely monitor its activity and advises the public to stay vigilant and heed official updates.
