More than 30 hospitals in Metro Manila in danger of running out of beds for COVID-19

At least 33 out of 136 hospitals in National Capital Region (NCR) were reported as being in the “danger” level in terms of bed capacity solely for the treatment of COVID-19 patients.

This was revealed by the Department of Health (DOH) as the said number is lower by one hospital compared to the data recorded last Sept. 23, Wednesday.

For the whole Metro Manila, the total bed capacity was maintained at the “warning” level with 52.1 percent of the 6,626 COVID-19 beds now occupied.

Compared to the Sept. 23 data, total bed occupancy in the NCR was also at “warning level” with 54.4 percent of the 6,555 COVID-19 beds now utilized.

The DOH said bed capacity data indicate a hospital’s readiness to respond to a surge of  coronavirus disease infections in their respective areas.

A hospital is “safe” from COVID-19 surge if there is less than 30 percent utilization rate for its COVID-19 beds.

A hospital is at a “warning” level when there is a 30 percent to 70 percent utilization rate.

Meanwhile, hospitals with more than 70 percent bed occupancy are in “danger” of being full in case of a surge.

On Thursday, October 1, a total of 314,079 infections of the respiratory disease were reported. This includes 254,223 recoveries and 5,562 fatalities.

As of this case, the Philippines now ranks as the 20th country with the most number of COVID-19 cases in the world, based on the virus tracker of the John Hopkins University in the United States.

Only data for occupancy of COVID-19 dedicated beds but not the total beds inside hospitals were also cited in this story.

Below is the breakdown of hospitals and its bed utilization rates based on the health department’s nCOV tracker for bed capacity as of Sept. 30:
