ACCORDING to a medical association, a lot of Filipinos became diabetic after contracting the COVID-19 disease.
This was the pronouncement made by Dr. Carol Montano of the Philippine Society of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism (PSEDM) during her appearance at the Laging Handa public briefing.
According to Dr. Montano, based on studies of the meta-analysis of the experiences of various hospitals in the country and overseas, it was seen that if a person contracted COVID-19, there was an increase in diabetes cases compared to pre-pandemic times.
She explained also that there is now what she calls “new onset diabetes” due to COVID-19.
And it was seen in the meta-analysis that there was also an increase in diabetes cases among individuals 18 years old and above.
Because of this, Dr. Montano said that the PSEDM is working together with the Department of Health (DOH) to encourage diabetic patients to take the COVID-19 booster shot since the full dose is not anymore sufficient.
Dr. Montano added that experts have seen that diabetics became more protected and there was a decline in hospitalization among diabetics due to COVID-19 after they received their booster shot.
