Learning in the New Normal through the eyes of children

Many parents know the kind of responsibilities that they carry atop their shoulders when it comes to their school-age children. It is a responsibility handed down to them the moment they started a family of their own after having been dependent on their own parents before when they were still in school themselves.

Most of them think they know what to do on how to be responsible for their school-age children. And why not? They believe their responsibilities revolve around three major areas only: regularly coordinating with their kids’ teachers in school, perhaps through Parent-Teacher Conferences, working hard even at home to provide financial support for their children’s academic requirements, and making sure that kids participate in extra-curricular activities.

That has been a well-established system a lot of parents have become accustomed to, that is, until the COVID-19 pandemic happened.

Since the imposed community quarantine, life at home drastically changed. With the opening of a new school year that introduces a new learning approach that is unprecedented in the history of the Philippine educational system, parents grapple for ideas on how to systemically operate their households while their children stay at home.

As schools send out engaging virtual assignments to students, parents scramble on figuring out how to balance their household chores along with learning how to manage their children’s home-school education. And all these activities entailed embracing a new perspective on active parenting.

While parenting could feel like a thankless job, parents get immeasurable fulfillment when they see their children accomplish their dreams in life. But do they really know their children’s true aspirations?

The new normal is a pivotal moment for children at home. How parents respond to the changes in their household will greatly affect their children’s lives forever. The prolonged home quarantine allowed parents and children to bond together, get to know more about each other, be involved in one another’s activities, and rediscover their relationship as they spend more time at home.

PLDT Home’s latest ad proves that children’s dreams are developed and built at home.

In the video, a mom is seen preparing snacks for her child who’s home-schooling. Upon approaching her daughter’s room, the mom overheard the kid discussing her aspirations to the teacher through an online class set-up. And the camera pans towards the different household chores and responsibilities that the daughter observed from her parents. In the end, the child reveals her real ambition in life – to be like her parents and to love just like how her parents love her at home.

As people navigate this new way of life, they learn how to live under new patterns, build new habits, and create new happy memories with loved ones. Gone were the “programmed” parenting of the past as a new “connected” relationship is welcomed. In this new normal, what is rediscovered are what really matters – the family and home.
