Just another Duterte joke

IT’S just another joke, according to his spokesperson.

That’s how presidential spokesperson Harry Roque described President Rodrigo Duterte’s most recent statement, which was widely criticized for reportedly being insensitive.

He defended Duterte whom her claimed just wanted to “lighten the mood,” when he hinted at capping the crater of an angry Taal Volcano which erupted over the weekend, displacing thousands of residents living in at least five localities surrounding the island volcano.

The President, of course, was trying to lighten the mood dahil ano ba naman yan, may pandemya na nga, may pagputok pa ng bulkang Taal. That’s the President’s style,” Roque told newsmen when asked to comment on criticisms over the President’s statement.

Roque, nonetheless, said that the President care less over the criticisms since he’s already on his way out.

Last week, Duterte joked about capping Taal Volcano’s crater after it was placed under Alert Level 3 and released a “phreatomagmatic plume.”

State volcanologists explained raising Taal’s status to Alert Level 3 “means that there is magmatic intrusion at the Main Crater that may further drive succeeding eruptions.”

According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, at least 3,000 persons were forcibly evacuated from the “high-risk” towns of Agoncillo, Laurel, San Nicolas and Lemery in Batangas at the onset of the eruption of the volcano. Alert Level 3 remains hoisted over these areas as the volcano has yet to show any sign of slowing down.
