The gentle giant hardly made noise in his return to the most popular team in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).

With blockbuster player trades happening almost left and right, 7-foot behemoth Greg Slaughter heralded his return to the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel on a quiet note amid the noise, after a rather early 2020 announcement of a sabbatical from the sport.

No fanfare, no marching bands, no flashing cameras from the media greeted Slaughter, only the news of his return confirmed by none other than the Kings’ master bench tactician Tim Cone himself, though he claimed not being privy to specific details.

With this announcement, the team will all buckle down to work, with Slaughter being a vital cog in the Gin Kings’ rotation to defend its Philippine Cup title it won last year under a “bubble” format in Clark, Pampanga.

Fans are excited with Slaughter’s return, and with June Mar Fajardo’s impending return as well after a long layoff due to injury, it will be an interesting match up.

All Filipino, mano y mano, one aching to get back on track to reclaim lost glory after his team was dethroned as consecutive Philippine Cup champion.

The other, eager to show improvements in the facets of his game apparently honed by intensive training in the US during his self-proclaimed break, and to prove that getting him back was the best decision for the team.

Cone never hid his desire to get Slaughter back to the team to defend their Philippine Cup title after winning it last year, what with Fajardo cleared to play next season.

With the presence of Slaughter, he admitted they will be a lot more creative and versatile in designing their plays. More importantly, Slaughter will provide Japeth Aguilar much-needed respite during the game.

He knows what’s at stake, especially that SMB also did a rebuilding of their own with the acquisition of the flashy CJ Perez from Terrafirma in a monumental trade.

With the Beermen’s bevy of veteran players, the addition of CJ Perez, and the return of Fajardo and Terrence Romeo working with Perez, Cone knows the Beermen will be almost unstoppable.

The PBA’s Season 46, beginning with the Philippine Cup, is tentatively slated to start on April, 9, 2021.
