Nagsasagawa na ng full inevestigation ang Bureau of Immigration (BI) kaugnay sa departure ng 44 kababaihan na biktima ng trafficking sa Syria.
Ito ang inihayag ni Immigration Commissionmer Jaime Morente sa hearing ng Senate Committee on Women, Children, Family, Relations and Gender Equality na pinangunahan ni Senator Risa Hontiveros.
“We received information from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Office of the Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs about 44 women in Syria that were victimized by human trafficking syndicates,” said Morente. “I have ordered the immediate creation of a fact-finding committee to find out how these victims were able to depart the Philippines,” anang komisyuner.
Sa pagdinig ng Senado, ipinahayag ni Morente ang kanyang pangako na tutulungan ang kumite sa pagsisiyasat sa mga posibleng sangkot sa trafficking scheme.
“I am at a loss for words from what I heard. Ako sa totoo lamang ay nahihiya. I am disappointed and frustrated about the alleged involvement of BI personnel in these nefarious activities,” anang opisyal.
Ibinahagi rin nito na 29 immigration officers ang kanilang iniimbestigahan na sangkot sa nasabing scheme.
“As already proven in the past, we will not hesitate to make them face the harshest penalties,” ani Morente.
Pinasalamatan naman ni Morente sa nasabing pagdinig ang mga tumestigo na nagpahayag ng kanilang karanasan upang mabigyang-linaw ang isyu.
“The alleged involvement of a handful of immigration personnel with such schemes gives the BI a bad name. It is unfair to many good immigration officers who perform their jobs religiously and faithfully, especially those involved in activities of the IACAT (Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking)”.
Sinabi ni Morente na mula 2017 hanggang 2020, may kabuuang 112,033 na mga Pilipino ang hinarang sa pag-alis sa bansa dahil sa pagtatangkang pumuslit ng walang mga kaukulang dokumenro.
“Majority of this number were those seen to be workers leaving in the guise of being tourists,” pagbabahagi pa ni Morente.
Sa parehong panahon, isang kabuuang 1,070 na mga biktima ang na-refer din sa IACAT para sa mga posibleng biktima ng human trafficking.
Dahil sa pagsisikap ng BI, kasama ang iba pang mga miyembro ng konseho, ang Pilipinas ay nag-upgrade at patuloy na napanatili ang Tier 1 ranking nito sa ikalimang taon nang sunod-sunod, US State Department’s Trafficking in Persons Report, na nagpatunay sa makabuluhang pagsisikap ng ahensya upang maprotektahan ang mga departing Filipinos.
