AN expert from the Department of Health (DOH) said that the sub-variant of the highly transmissible COVID-19 Delta variant is not yet considered a “formal” one.

Dr. Edsel Salvana, a member of the DOH Technical Advisory Group, said there is no need to panic at this time since the sub-variant, called AY 4.2., needs more further study.

More studies are needed about it so there’s no need to panic,” he said.

It is not yet formally considered a variant. It’s just like Delta,” he averred, adding that AY 4.2. “has increased transmissibility that is similar or just slightly higher than Delta.”

Reports said that the sub-variant was noticed to be causing an increasing number of infections in the United Kingdom
