Comelec to review its contract with Smartmatic

THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) said it will review of its contract with Smartmatic Inc. in light of allegations of security breach in Smartmatic’s system for the May 9, 2022 national and local elections.

Direct the Law Department of the Comelec to conduct a review of the contract with Smartmatic and to advise the courses of action to be taken by the Commission as may be provided by law and jurisprudence,” according to Comelec Chairperson Saidamen Balt Pangarungan, in a statement read by Commissioner George Garcia in a press conference held today.

It can be recalled that Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III earlier mentioned about an employee of Smartmatic who is said to be involved in an alleged security breach in Smartmatic’s system, and is already said to be under the custody of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).

Relatedly, Pangarungan already instructed the Executive Director of the Comelec to directly coordinate with the NBI and get a copy of its report on the investigation surrounding said security breach.
