FORMER Ilocos Sur Governor Chavit Singson announced on Sunday that he is withdrawing from the Senate race in the upcoming national and local elections, citing health concerns as the primary reason.
Speaking to supporters at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Singson expressed gratitude for their unwavering support but emphasized the need to prioritize his well-being.
“After much thought, I have decided that I will no longer continue with my candidacy in the Senate,” Singson said in Filipino. “I don’t want to force it, especially at the expense of my health.”
The veteran politician disclosed that although he has been undergoing treatment for pneumonia, he still requires ample rest.
“I feel your love and continued trust in me. Your support is overwhelming. In my heart, I know I am already a winner,” he added.
Despite stepping back from his political campaign, Singson pledged to continue his efforts in providing modern electric vehicles to transport groups. The “Magnificent 7,” a coalition of transport groups, previously endorsed Singson’s candidacy due to his commitment to supplying modern public utility vehicle (PUV) units.
During his filing of candidacy, Singson also vowed to open bank accounts for those in need as part of his platform to promote economic inclusivity.
Singson, who has also served as a deputy national security adviser, assured his supporters that his advocacy for improving public transport and social welfare will persist, even outside the Senate race.
