CAMP CAPINPIN, Rizal – A member of the New People’s Army (NPA) was killed during a firefight with the Army’s 2nd Infantry (Jungle Fighter) Division (2ID) in Barangay Balibago, Lobo, Batangas, on Wednesday, November 4.
According to reports from the 202nd Infantry Brigade, troops from the 59th Infantry Battalion were conducting routine security operations when they were fired upon by NPA rebels, sparking a 20-minute gun battle. The rebels eventually fled the area.
The fatality was identified as Rey Delos Santos, also known by the aliases “Japeth,” “Roy,” and “Ren.” One soldier sustained minor injuries during the encounter.
A former rebel, now working with the government’s peace initiatives, stated that the death of Delos Santos further weakens the already dwindling strength of the NPA in Batangas.
The troops recovered two high-powered firearms, two anti-personnel mines, and a magazine at the encounter site.
“While the soldiers do not rejoice in the deaths of our fellow Filipinos, we have a solemn duty to uphold peace, protect our people, and enforce the rule of law,” said Maj. Gen. Cerilo Balaoro Jr., commander of the 2ID.
Maj. Gen. Balaoro urged the remaining NPA members to surrender and avail of the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP), which offers them an opportunity to reintegrate into society and start anew.
“With the support of the public, government agencies, and stakeholders, we will not stop until our communities are free from the threats of NPA terrorism in Southern Tagalog and neighboring regions,” Balaoro concluded.
