DAVAO City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio seeks to run again for the city’s mayoralty post in the upcoming 2022 national and local elections, her spokesperson Liloan Mayor Christina Frasco revealed Thursday.
Although the Davao City mayor has yet to confirm her political plans, Frasco revealed that the news apparently came from Sara herself and added that his brother will also vie for reelection.
“According to Mayor Sara, she will run for reelection as Davao City mayor and incumbent Vice Mayor Sebastian Duterte will run for reelection,” the spokesman stated.
The local chief served as the city’s mayor from 2010 to 2013 and managed to regain the same post from 2016 to 2019. In 2019, the city’s voters re-elected Sara whose tenure of office is expected to end in 2022.
While Baste has, so far, governed Davao just once, Sara was elected as mayor for three consecutive times and is expected to reach her term limit, should she win the mayoralty race in the May elections.
Though Sara has taken pole position in presidential surveys, she has declared that she is no longer interested to achieve the Office of the President seat as she had a mutual agreement with her father, President Rodrigo Duterte, that only one Duterte will run for the country’s two highest posts.
The chief executive has earlier accepted the endorsement of the ruling political party, Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) Cusi faction, to nominate him as a standard-bearer for the vice presidential post in next year’s elections.
On Wednesday, Sara expressed support for the elder Duterte, urging those who believe in her and her political vision to give her father a fair share of support.
