A TOTAL of 200 individuals, including a town mayor in Romblon, were arrested by a combined team of the Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) Romblon, Romblon Provincial Mobile Force Company, and the Ferrol Municipal Police Station who raided the Tubigon Square Garden in the town of Ferrol in Romblon.
In a report received by PNP Chief PGen. Dionardo Carlos, the police conducted Oplan Bolilyo after having verified information that an illegal cockfighting (“sabong”) will be held at the Tubigon Square Garden even if the area is still under Alert Level 3.
“Sabong” or any mass gathering is still not allowed under Alert Level 3 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The PNP identified the mayor as Jovencio Mayor, Jr., the incumbent mayor of the town of Ferrol. He will face charges of violation of IATF Resolution No. 1579 Series of 2020 and Presidential Decree 449 or the cockfighting law of 1974, as amended by Presidential Decree 1602.
Among those confiscated during the operation were bet money, gaffs (“tari”), and other cockfighting materials, including the gamecocks.
