VP Sara steps down as DepEd chief

VICE President and concurrent Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Sara Duterte announced her resignation as head of DepEd.

She was DepEd chief since June 30, 2022.

Her stepping down as Education Secretary came a few days after she announced that the “Uniteam,” an alliance created during the 2022 elections, is officially over, saying “we’re not candidates anymore.”

Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Secretary Cheloy Garafil said the VP tendered her resignation as DepEd Chief, and also relinquished her post as vice chairperson of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC).

President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. accepted the resignation. “We thank her for her service,” Garafil said.

In a press conference, VP Sara thanked all those who were part of her journey as DepEd Secretary, all stakeholders and more importantly, her “DepEd family,” including the teachers and the learners, all that she had done during her tenure, and the promise of “no one will be left behind.”

She, however, did not cite any specific reason why she stepped down.
