Airport security personnel intercepted a revolver hidden inside a passenger’s carry-on bag at the General Santos International Airpor, preventing the traveler from boarding a flight to Manila.
The firearm was discovered during routine baggage screening for a flight bound for Manila via Cebu.
Security Screening Officer (SSO) Ella Dane Ireneo, who was operating the X-ray machine, spotted an image resembling a prohibited item and immediately alerted a baggage inspector who conducted a manual inspection of the bag in the presence of an on-duty officer from the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group (PNP-AVSEGROUP), leading to the discovery of the revolver.
The passenger was asked to present the required license to own and possess a firearm, as well as a permit to transport it. Authorities said the passenger failed to produce the necessary documents.
The firearm also reportedly had no serial number, prompting law enforcement personnel to prevent the passenger from boarding the flight. Office for Transportation Security (OTS) Administrator Gilberto DC Cruz thanked the PNP for its immediate assistance and reminded travelers that firearms and gun replicas are subject to strict airport security requirements.
Cruz urged passengers who need to transport firearms to secure the appropriate permits and clearances from authorities, including the PNP-AVSEGROUP, before bringing such items to an airport.
“Knowing and following the security requirements will help prevent inconvenience, delays, and possible disruption to your travel,” Cruz said, who added that the interception forms part of the government’s continuing efforts to strengthen airport security and protect air travelers.
