After almost 12 years and 57,000 Tweets later, Twitter finally suspends outgoing US President Donald Trump’s account–permanently.
The @realDonaldTrump handle was largely instrumental to the ascent to the throne of a New York real estate mogul and reality TV actor/producer. He fed on the account to gather supporters that helped him become the 45th US president.
But for some, not all (presumably) good things last. The successful Twitter handle was also witness to his final Tweet rants that enticed his pro-Trump supporters to storm the US Capitol.
The siege resulted in the death of five people as the throng tried to stop the counting of electoral college votes that will finally certify the election of incoming US President Joe Biden as the 46th President of the United States.
A post by Twitter said “After close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them — specifically how they are being received and interpreted on and off Twitter — we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence.”
But despite Twitter pulling the plug on the account, Trump remained defiant, as he hinted that he will be “building out our own platform in the near future. We will not be SILENCED!”
Asked if he will attend the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden, Trump declared he will not attend. News media in the US reported that outgoing US Vice President Mike Pence will most likely attend if invited although a spokesperson from Pence’s camp said there is no decision yet.
