Teodoro orders regional directors to intensify preparations for Tropical Cyclone “Nika”

Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City — DEFENSE Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr., also chair of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), convened with key officials today to coordinate proactive measures for Severe Tropical Storm (STS) Nika as it approaches the Philippines.

At the meeting, Teodoro directed regional directors to intensify preparedness actions based on forecasts from the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (DOST-PAGASA). The gathering underscored the critical need for cohesive disaster preparedness strategies at all levels of government.

Assistant Secretary Bernardo Rafaelito B. Alejandro IV urged each region to activate its Inter-Agency Coordination Cell (IACC) to streamline communication and ensure a unified response with local authorities. “Effective preparedness relies on real-time coordination and swift action across agencies,” Alejandro emphasized.

Director Agnes Palacio of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) highlighted her agency’s role in coordinating IACC operations and urged all regions to make full use of available resources and data. She encouraged unaffected areas to take this time to strengthen their preparedness as well. “Preparedness is not just for those in Nika’s projected path—it’s a continuous effort for resilience,” she stated.

The meeting also addressed secondary hazards that could exacerbate the storm’s impact, including strong winds, heavy rains, and storm surges. Palacio stressed the importance of public awareness, instructing local authorities to actively disseminate information and incorporate it into precautionary plans. “Public safety relies on informed and prepared communities,” Palacio added.

Alejandro reiterated the need for prudence, instructing regional directors to prioritize life-saving actions and property protection. “It is always wise to err on the side of caution,” he said, underscoring the need for ongoing communication among directors to ensure timely responses to changing conditions.

As part of the coordinated measures, all marine activities in areas forecasted to be affected by STS Nika are suspended until further notice. Regional directors have been tasked with overseeing preparedness in their jurisdictions, while the public is strongly urged to stay informed and follow updates from the OCD, PAGASA, and local authorities.
