The Senate has approved a measure seeking to overhaul the legal framework governing the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), bringing the proposed Revised Philippine Coast Guard Law one step closer to becoming law.
Senate Bill No. 2116 was approved on third reading with 19 senators voting in favor and no abstentions.
The measure is designed to strengthen the PCG’s mandate, organizational structure and institutional capabilities as the agency takes on an expanding role in the country’s maritime affairs.
Under the proposed law, the Coast Guard’s ability to carry out its responsibilities in maritime safety, security and law enforcement would be further supported, along with its mandate to protect the marine environment and safeguard the country’s maritime interests.
The approval reflects the Senate’s support for strengthening the PCG as a key government agency responsible for protecting the country’s vast maritime domain.
For the Coast Guard, the passage of the bill marks an important step toward building an organization that is better equipped to respond to evolving challenges at sea and meet the demands of maritime operations.
With Senate approval secured, the proposed legislation now moves forward in the legislative process, bringing the PCG closer to having an updated legal and institutional framework for its future operations.
