The United Kingdom lost an esteemed royal with the passing of His Royal Highness, The Prince Philip, husband of Queen Elizabeth, due to a deteriorating health condition.
The monarch, also known as the “Duke of Edinburgh,” is 99 years old.
“It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement.
According to the Royal UK website, Prince Philip passed away peacefully in Windsor Castle. It said “further announcements will be made in due course,” while asking people around the world to “join the Royal Family in mourning his loss.”
Prince Philip had been married to Queen Elizabeth, 94 years old and the current head monarch of the United Kingdom, for almost 74 years already. They tied the knot in November 20, 1947 at the Westminster Abbey four months after their engagement. Their wedding was officiated by two archbishops, one from Canterbury and one from York.
The former Philip Mountbatten officially retired from his royal duties more than three years ago, wherein he received medical treatments for various health conditions.
