President Marcos signs law fixing term of Philippine Coast Guard Commandant

President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr. has signed into law Republic Act No. 12122, which formally sets the term of office for the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Commandant to a maximum of three years.

The new law, which amends Republic Act No. 9993 or the Philippine Coast Guard Law of 2009, mandates that the PCG Commandant must hold the rank of Coast Guard Admiral, possess a command-at-sea badge, and have previously served as a District Commander.

The appointment will be made by the President and will take effect upon signing, unless sooner terminated by the Chief Executive.

The law also requires the Commandant’s compulsory retirement upon completion of the term or earlier relief by the President.

Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero and House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez signed the legislation, which was passed by the House of Representatives on September 19, 2024, amended by the Senate on January 20, 2025, and finalized on February 5, 2025.

The law takes effect immediately following its publication in the Official Gazette or a newspaper of general circulation.

This landmark measure strengthens the leadership stability of the Philippine Coast Guard, ensuring continuity in command as the agency continues its vital maritime security, safety, and law enforcement duties.
