PCG Spox calls on Filipinos to stand firm in defending West Philippine Sea

Commodore Jay Tarriela, spokesperson for the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on the West Philippine Sea, has urged Filipinos to unite in the fight for the country’s maritime sovereignty, emphasizing that the issue goes beyond the leadership of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.

“Our fight for the West Philippine Sea is a fight for truth, sovereignty, and national dignity. We cannot allow our message to be distorted—we must stand firm in defending what is rightfully ours,” Tarriela said in a statement.

He stressed that the territorial dispute is not solely the President’s battle but a collective responsibility of every Filipino, highlighting the importance of national unity in protecting the country’s territorial integrity.

The West Philippine Sea dispute remains a highly sensitive issue, with the Philippines asserting its rights based on the 2016 arbitral ruling that invalidated China’s sweeping claims over the South China Sea. The PCG, along with other government agencies, continues to monitor and respond to maritime incursions in the country’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

Tarriela’s strong stance reflects the government’s commitment to upholding the country’s sovereign rights despite growing tensions in the region.
