CHIEFS of police and unit commanders were directed to be on alert against threat groups attacking state security forces.
Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Police General Guillermo Eleazar issued the directive after a patrolman was injured when unidentified armed suspects ambushed their vehicle in Indanan, Sulu last Friday night.
According to reports, the PNP personnel were on board a patrol car on their way to Maimbung Municipal Police Station when the suspects ambushed them.
Investigation is now being conducted to identify the perpetrators.
PGen Eleazar said they are not discounting the possibility that some groups would step up the attacks on government forces not only to get the service firearms of policemen but also to project that they remain strong in certain areas.
In this way, this would be used by the threat groups as a leverage for their extortion activities, especially on candidates.
“Our campaign against loose firearms has been relentless, and we not discount the possibility that they will take interest on the police’s firearms, including the possibility of attacking our ranks to let the public know that they remain strong and use this as leverage to extort money from political candidates during the campaign season,” PGen Eleazar said.
He likewise asked the cooperation of the public to report to authorities if they notice some suspicious individuals who could pose a threat to public safety.
