THE police said it is looking at the possibility that some illegal drug syndicates have shifted their operations by setting up and cultivating marijuana plants inside condominiums.
This was declared by Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief General Guillermo Eleazar, who said that the successful operations of the police and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) have helped greatly reduce the shabu supply in the country and could have caused the shift.
Last week, a marijuana farm was discovered inside a condominium unit in Taguig City. Operatives of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) confiscated potted marijuana plants worth at least P2.2 million from the unit of a retired US Air Force serviceman and his Filipina live-in partner.
“We need to intensify our intelligence gathering kung ganito na ba ang style ngayon ng mga sindikato ng droga, lalo na sa marijuana. Posibleng may iba na ring gumagawa nito dahil mahirap mahuli kung ganitong nasa loob ng condominium,” Eleazar said.
He warned that police would be relentless in its efforts to curb the proliferation of marijuana. Quoting PDEA DIrector General Wilkins Villanueva, Eleazar said the demand for marijuana has actually increased.
“Our PDEA chief, Director General Wilkins Villanueva, also said last year that shabu users have shifted to marijuana and even ecstasy due to our intensified operations na rin. Kaya nga po nagfocus rin tayo sa pagpipigil nito at talagang tuloy-tuloy ang operasyon natin dito,” he noted.
“Huwag pakasiguro ang mga grupo na ‘yan dahil kayang-kaya naming silang sabayan kahit pa high-tech ang kanilang operation,” he said.
Eleazar said that police investigators are still looking at the possibility that the arrested suspects were members of a bigger drug syndicate.
“That will be part of our investigation. Isa sa mga suspek natin ay retired US airman at iyong isa naman ay kanyang live-in partner. We will check if they are connected to other drug groups,” he said.
Eleazar vowed to further strengthen the PNP’s partnership and coordination with the PDEA to stop the proliferation of marijuana and other illegal drugs.
