The Philippine National Police (PNP) has announced Wednesday that a policeman has died due to COVID-19, bringing the total number of fatalities among cops to 102.

In a statement issued Thursday, the PNP shared that a 34-year-old police sergeant has experienced and shown mild COVID-19 symptoms which prompted the patient to undergo a reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test on August 18. However, the result turned out positive.

Two days after, the cop, who was serving under the National Support Unit in Central Visayas, complained about his difficulty in breathing and was then rushed to a nearby hospital.

Not long after he was admitted to a hospital, the patient was declared dead on August 25 at around 8:30 a.m.

According to PNP Chief Police General Guillermo Lorenzo Eleazar, he received a report from the Health Service on August 25 delivering the news that the policeman died due to Pneumonia and Acute Respiratory failure secondary to COVID-19.

Taos pusong pakikiramay po ang aking pinapaabot sa pamilya ng ating pulis na namatay at nangangako po tayo ng anumang tulong sa kanila,” Eleazar expressed.
(We would like to extend our deepest condolence to the bereaved family of our late policeman and we promise that we will provide any help we can give to them.)

As of August 26, the PNP has recorded a total of 33,826 COVID-19 cases. Of these, 31,974 individuals have recovered.

The PNP also reported that on the same day, there are 93,725 or 42.19 percent of police staffs who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Among these, 104,562 or 47.07 percent received their first jab of vaccine while 23,845 or 10.73 percent police personnel are yet to be vaccinated.
