PHL debt up 4 percent, balloons to P12.68T

THE Philippine national debt ballooned to a new high for an overall P12.68 trillion as of March 2022.

In a report by the Bureau of Treasury (BTr), 4.8 percent was added to the total, equivalent to P586.29 billion, due to issued government securities to local and external lenders.

Of the country’s debt stock, 30.1 percent came from foreign borrowings, and 69.9 percent are the domestic ones.

The BTr said domestic debt of the national government was at P8.87 trillion, which is P455.45 billion or 5.4 percent higher compared to end-February levels.

External debt, on the other hand, was at P3.81 trillion, which is 3.6-percent or P130.84 billion higher compared to the month of February.
