Despite widespread efforts to promote vaccination against COVID-19 and other diseases, a significant portion of the population remains hesitant to receive vaccines. According to a study conducted by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), misinformation and speculation regarding vaccine effects and side effects are among the primary reasons for this reluctance.
Some individuals believe that vaccines are a primary cause of illness rather than a preventative measure against diseases. Others fear potential side effects such as fertility issues, heart diseases, or even the implantation of microchips inside the body. In response to these concerns, the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) has launched the “OK Ka Sa Bakuna” campaign, aimed at dispelling misconceptions surrounding vaccination and emphasizing its importance in combating diseases such as measles, rubella, influenza, and polio.
PRC Secretary-General Dr. Gwendolyn Pang emphasized the crucial role of vaccines in strengthening the immune system and urged individuals to take advantage of vaccination opportunities to protect themselves and their loved ones.
While some individuals may experience mild reactions such as fever and body aches after receiving a vaccine, these are typically temporary and indicate the body’s immune response. The World Health Organization (WHO) reaffirmed the effectiveness and safety of vaccines, noting that the absence of side effects does not imply vaccine ineffectiveness.
Normal side effects of vaccines, such as pain or soreness at the injection site, nausea, or headaches, vary depending on the individual’s response. Despite these minor discomforts, vaccines remain a vital tool in preventing the spread of infectious diseases.
Sanjeev Kafley, IFRC Head of Delegation to the Philippines, stressed the importance of community collaboration in combating vaccine misinformation. To address concerns directly, the PRC, in collaboration with local governments, has initiated house-to-house information drives to educate individuals about the importance of vaccination.
The “OK Ka Sa Bakuna” campaign exemplifies the PRC’s commitment to public health and community immunity. For information on vaccine scheduling and availability, individuals are encouraged to visit their nearest PRC chapter or barangay health center or contact the PRC hotline at 143 for assistance.
