FIBA understands, and the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) was just grateful that there will be no sanctions from FIBA (Fédération Internationale de Basketball Amateur), the sport of basketball’s world governing body.

This was stressed by SBP President Al Panlilio after making the decision to pull out of its hosting duties of Group A and Group C games, which is supposed to happen next month in Clark, Pampanga, because of travel restrictions.

Group A is composed of the Philippines, Indonesia, South Korea and Thailand while Group C action involves teams from Australia, Guam, Hong Kong and New Zealand.

Group A games, including that of Group B, will both be held in Doha, Qatar following Japan’s decision to cancel its hosting of Group B games due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Panlilio said they worked hard to bring the hosting of the qualifiers to the country, following the success of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) in holding its lone conference of its 45th Season last year in Clark, Pampanga under a “bubble” format.

He lamented the fact that the matter is simply beyond their control since there are travel restrictions in effect in the country because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Currently, travelers from Australia, Hong Kong and South Korea are banned from entering the country.
