A TOP official of the Department of Health (DOH) said that face shields are not advised to be worn when outside, which is what the government policy is.
Generally known as a man of science, DOH Undersecretary Leopoldo Vega said in a statement aired over the government television station that face shields are needed only when people are indoors in malls or when having a face-to-face interaction and not in outdoor settings as it may cause accidents.
“Ang face shields kailangan lang naman talaga ‘yan ‘pag nasa indoor ka, ‘pag nasa mall ka or pag may interaction ka face-to-face inside. Kapag nasa outside naman, ang risk of transmission is very low. ‘Pag naglalakad ka sa kalye, baka maka-affect ‘yung moist nito so puwede ninyo pong tanggalin ‘yan,” Usec. Vega said.
Vega explained that face shields in closed spaces is necessary as it prevents one from being infected or infecting others, unknowingly.
“Kapag pumasok kayo indoors po kailangan may face shields kasi ito ‘yung added protection na hindi kayo maka-transmit o mahawaan kayo,” he said.
Vega’s statement runs smack against Health Secretary Francisco Duque who earlier rejected calls to scrap the need to wear face shields in public places.
Interestingly, the Philippines is the only country mandating this extra layer of protection against COVID-19.
