The Philippines has new boxing world champion!
Mark Magsayo who hails from the province of Bohol dethroned American title-holder Gary Russell Jr. and snapped his 6-year reign as the WBC Featherweight Champion. Thus, Russell’s streak as the longest-reigning champion among active boxers also ended.
Judges scored it 114-114, 115-113 and 115-113 for Magsayo, who wins by majority decision to become the new world champ.
Magsayo’s chances of winning became more evident when he hurt Russell’s right shoulder in the third round and made him a mere one-hand puncher in the last 9 rounds of the match held today in New Jersey, USA.
