Maria Ressa wins Nobel Peace Prize

MARIA Ressa, the co-founder of news website Rappler in the Philippines, became the first Filipino to have ever won the Nobel Peace Prize.

She shares the award with another journalist from Russia, Dmitry Muratov, editor-in-chief of Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta

Both journalists were awarded for their courageous stand in advocating freedom of expression.

“Ms. Ressa and Mr. Muratov are receiving the Peace Prize for their courageous fight for freedom of expression in the Philippines and Russia,” Chairwoman Berit Reiss-Andersen of the Norwegian Nobel Committee told a news conference.

The two were chosen out of 329 candidates for the prize.
