A MAGNA Carta for Filipino seafarers is being pushed for passage at the House of Representatives.
According to Bataan First District Rep. Geraldine Roman, given the life-threatening nature of the work of Filipino seafarers, it is only right that there is a law that ensures their security, safety, position, and medical needs.
Rep. Roman is pushing for the comprehensive protection of the rights and welfare of Filipino seafarers through House Bill 7325 or the Magna Carta for Filipino Seafarers.
“Isinusulong ng House Bill 7325 o ang Magna Carta for Filipino Seafarers ang komprehensibong proteksyon ng karapatan at kapakanan ng ating mga kapwa mandaragat na Filipino,” she said.
“Sa kanilang buwis-buhay na trabaho, nararapat lamang na mayroong batas na titiyak sa kanilang seguridad, kaligtasan, posisyon, at medikal na pangangailangan,” she added.
The bill aims to develop a pool of competent and world-class seafarers through a system of education, training and licensing.
It also outlines the rights and welfare of seafarers and was approved by a voice vote on second reading at the House of Representatives on March 1, 2023.
