LTFRB issues over 1,000 special permits, boosts safety measures for holy week travel surge

With the anticipated influx of travelers during the Lenten season, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has issued over 1,000 special permits and launched a series of inspections to ensure a safe and orderly Holy Week exodus.

LTFRB Chairperson Teofilo Guadiz III announced that as of April 8, a total of 1,018 special permits had been granted to bolster the number of provincial buses operating during the peak travel period. These permits are valid from April 11 to 27, covering both the Holy Week and the days following.

To complement this initiative, the LTFRB has commenced random inspections of public utility vehicles (PUVs) and transport terminals. These inspections include checks on operator documentation, such as permits, fare matrices, vehicle markings, and the presence of necessary safety accessories.

“The inspections began on April 7 and will continue throughout the Holy Week travel period,” Guadiz said.

He advised the public to plan their trips ahead of time, ensure travel schedules are checked, and have all tickets and necessary documents prepared.

Starting April 11, the LTFRB will also monitor private terminals to ensure the availability of help desks and adequate personnel to assist passengers.

In addition to these enforcement efforts, Guadiz issued a reminder to avoid using unregistered or “colorum” vehicles, emphasizing the safety risks and lack of insurance coverage for passengers.

“These illegal vehicles have not undergone proper inspections and could endanger lives,” he warned.

While the use of face masks is no longer mandatory, the LTFRB encourages passengers to continue observing basic health protocols. Travelers are advised to bring hygiene kits, alcohol, and face masks, particularly when in crowded terminals or buses.

The LTFRB assured the public that it is prepared to respond to concerns around the clock. Passengers are encouraged to report complaints via the agency’s 24/7 hotline at 1342, its official Facebook page, or through email at [email protected].
