The driver of a sports utility vehicle (SUV) caught on video driving recklessly in Pasay City has been slapped with a 90-day suspension of his license, following an incident that endangered other road users.
The sanction comes amid a directive from Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to hold abusive and lawless motorists accountable for traffic violations.
Department of Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez stressed that irresponsible drivers have no place on the country’s roads, especially those who put the lives of motorists, cyclists, and commuters at risk.
“We repeatedly remind everyone to drive carefully at all times and to show consideration for fellow road users. Let us practice discipline on the road and avoid being abusive drivers,” Lopez said.
The incident gained widespread attention after a video showing a white SUV speeding and overtaking dangerously went viral on social media. At one point, the vehicle nearly hit a cyclist, sparking public outrage and calls for stricter enforcement of traffic laws.
In response, the Land Transportation Office issued a Show Cause Order to the registered owner and driver of the Toyota Fortuner involved in the incident. They were directed to explain alleged violations, including reckless driving and allowing an improper person to operate a motor vehicle.
Authorities have also placed the vehicle under alarm status, preventing any transactions involving its registration while the investigation is ongoing.
Officials said the swift action underscores the government’s renewed push to promote road safety and enforce accountability among erring drivers.
