BINANGONAN, Rizal – Even under the most difficult times, the local government is sustaining a search for promising artists who could probably follow the footsteps of great Filipino national artists like Botong Francisco and Fernando Amorsolo.

For this year’s celebration of National Arts Month, Binangonan Municipal Administrator Russel Callanta Ynares said that they have received a total of 32 entries vying for top awards in Binangonan’s 4th Annual Painting Competition.

With a theme “Positibong Naidulot ng Pandemya sa Bawat Pamilya,” Ynares said that they’re actually looking at providing opportunities for artists to harness their creative energies in uplifting the nation’s spirit, especially during this time of public health crisis.

However, he hinted at the tough task facing the designated members of the board of judges whom he claimed have admitted experiencing difficulties in coming up with the winning entries, as “most of them appear to be ‘obra maestras.’”

Interestingly, Ynares said that their love for art may have something to do with their proximity to Angono, which is considered the country’s Arts Capital, and as such “wouldn’t allow our town to be left behind when it comes to art and culture activities like the National Arts Month.”

He added that while Binangonan is known for being a fishing town, “we have produced a long list of promising artists who have excelled in both local and international art communities.”

Ynares, himself an art collector, said that the LGU has even made culture and arts an integral part of their annual work program.

“We have always recognized culture and art in different forms with the celebration of the annual National Arts Month every February. In fact, half-way through January, the Municipal Government of Binangonan, in cooperation with various town-based non-government organizations, is already gearing up for a month of artistic festivities, starting with its theme – for this year, the lighter side of the pandemic for the family,” Ynares said in a statement posted in the Binangonan LGU’s social media page.

Cash prize, citation and other perks await the winning entries, which would be announced next week.
