A disbarment complaint has been filed against lawyer Glenn Chong after he allegedly made inappropriate remarks about First Lady Liza Marcos.
The Supreme Court confirmed Friday that the complaint was lodged by lawyer and university professor Andre de Jesus on Wednesday. The controversy stems from a statement Chong reportedly made during a rally in March, where he challenged the First Lady to face him so he could slap her “back-to-back.”
De Jesus, in his complaint, criticized Chong’s behavior, emphasizing the importance of professionalism and respect among legal practitioners. In a statement, he reminded fellow lawyers of their duty to uphold decorum, regardless of circumstances.
“Hindi dapat tayo bastos, kahit sa ating mga katunggali: sa korte, sa pulitika, o sa buhay. At lalung-lalo na dapat hindi tayo bastos sa kababaihan,” he said.
(“We shouldn’t be impertinent, even in our actions in court, in politics, or at home. We especially should not be discourteous to women.”)
The case highlights the ongoing discussion about ethics and civility within the legal profession, particularly when it comes to public figures and contentious issues. The Supreme Court has yet to release a statement regarding the complaint.
