Kickstarting the economy triggered COVID-19 surge — Duque

This may be what Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Francisco Duque was alluding to when he said that easing of restrictions triggered the surge of record-high figures representing daily tallies of fresh COVID-19 cases,

In a meeting with President Rodrigo Duterte Monday night, Duque particularly hinted at efforts to kick start the economy as the compelling factor that resulted in the exponential increase in the number of coronavirus cases over the past several days.

Aside from laxity in the protocols, the DOH boss blamed what he aptly referred to as the public’s token compliance with the mandatory use of face masks and face shields.

Another reason behind the radical spike, he added, is the presence of new COVID-19 variants–supposedly more transmissible.

So nagluwag tayo at binuksan natin ang malaking bahagi ng ekonomiya… na nagdulot ng increased mobility and yung increased mobility nagdulot ng increased transmission kaya exponential,” Duque said.
