THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) said jail time and perpetual ban on holding any government position await candidates who will violate the election campaign guidelines to be issued by the poll body regarding physical or face-to-face campaigning for next year’s National and Local elections.

According to Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez, violation of election laws will be considered an election offense on rules related to physical campaigning.

Included as possible penalties are incarceration of up to six years and lifetime ban on holding any government post.

Jimenez advised that it is best to just wait for the Comelec guidelines on physical campaigning to know more about the penalties for election offenses.

The Comelec spokesperson also clarified that the number of people who will be allowed to participate in a campaign rally or miting de avance will be based on the Alert Level System.
